AI Share of Voice: Measure Your Share of AI Answers

AI Share of Voice

Traditional share of voice told you how many ads or rankings you owned. AI share of voice tells you something more valuable: of all the times AI engines answer questions in your category, how often is your brand the one named, recommended, or cited — versus your competitors? It is the metric that reveals who actually owns the AI answers.

What Is AI Share of Voice?

AI share of voice (AI SOV) is the percentage of AI-generated search answers in your category where your brand appears — measured against the total answers, and against your competitors. It is the AI-search version of the classic SOV metric, updated for a world where "visibility" means being named inside an answer, not showing an ad.

There are three ways to count it:

  • Mention share — of all category answers, how many mention your brand?
  • Recommendation share — how many name you as a good option?
  • Citation share — how many use your website as a source?

Each is a different claim on the conversation, and together they show how much of the AI-driven demand you own.

Why AI Share of Voice Is the Metric to Watch

Share of voice is rising in importance for three reasons:

  1. It's the natural extension of AI visibility tracking. Businesses have moved from "am I visible in AI?" to "how much of the AI conversation do I own?" SOV answers that competitively.
  2. It's productized. Semrush, HubSpot, and others now ship competitor share of voice as a core AI feature — evidence the metric has gone mainstream.
  3. It's actionable. SOV tells you exactly where you're losing and to whom, which turns abstract "AI strategy" into a concrete list of questions to win.

If visibility is "are you in the room?", share of voice is "how much of the room is yours?"

How to Calculate AI Share of Voice

The method is straightforward, and it's what we automate:

  1. Define your category questions. The set of buying questions customers actually ask AI in your space.
  2. Ask the engines. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI answer each one.
  3. Count your appearances. For each question, did your brand get mentioned, recommended, or cited?
  4. Count your competitors'. Do the same for every brand the engines name.
  5. Compute the shares. Your appearances ÷ total appearances = your share of voice. Compare per engine and per question.

The result is a number you can trend: "Our AI share of voice rose from 8% to 15% in three months" is a statement that means something to a team, a board, and a budget.

Reading Your AI Share of Voice Report

Use the breakdown, not just the headline:

  • By question. Where do you own the answer, and where do you own nothing? The zeros are your biggest opportunities.
  • By engine. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI cite differently. Your SOV will differ — find out why.
  • By competitor. Who owns the share you're missing, and what sources drive it? A competitor dominating recommendations is usually citing from a few roundups you're not in.

Each view points to a specific action — get into the comparison article, publish the missing answer, strengthen the corroboration. That's the point of the metric.

MetricWhat it measures
AI visibilityWhether you appear at all
AI rankHow you rank per question
AI share of voiceYour share of the total conversation
Brand monitoringMentions and reputation over time

Visibility says "are you there?" Share of voice says "how much of the market do you own?" The most complete view uses both.

How to Grow Your AI Share of Voice

Growing SOV is growing the numerator — more appearances across more questions:

  1. Win your invisible questions. The questions where you own zero share are the fastest wins. Answer them directly. See AI search optimization.
  2. Earn corroboration. Share follows sources. Get into the roundups, review sites, and directories that already dominate the answers. See how to get cited by AI.
  3. Publish comparison content. "X vs Y" pages earn recommendations and citations in the same answers your competitors win.
  4. Re-measure monthly. SOV is a trend. Track it and prove the movement.

AI Share of Voice FAQ

How is AI share of voice different from traditional SOV? Traditional SOV counts your share of impressions or ad spend. AI share of voice counts your share of AI-generated answers — how often your brand is mentioned, recommended, or cited when the engines answer category questions. It measures owned conversation, not paid placement.

What's a good AI share of voice? There's no universal number — it depends on category and how many credible brands the engines name. The benchmark that matters is your trend and your relative position: are you gaining share against your real competitors? Compare against them, not against an industry average.

Can I see share of voice per competitor? Yes. The report shows each competitor's share, so you can see exactly who owns the answers you don't — and which sources drive their share. That's the fastest path to a placement plan.

How often should I measure share of voice? Monthly. AI answers shift as models update and competitors publish. Monthly measurement catches share changes while you can still respond — and shows whether your optimization is moving the needle.
